Experience
Yasmeen has three years’ experience working with adults, children and adolescents in community mental health, inpatient and outpatient settings. Yasmeen is well regarded for providing empathic, practical and effective individual, couple and family therapy for a wide range of presenting issues, including anxiety, depression, work stress, drug & alcohol problems, anger management, grief and loss, parent-child relationships, parenting difficulties, adolescent issues and facilitating adjustment to chronic medical conditions in older people.
Yasmeen has expertise in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT). This involves helping people to manage difficult thoughts and feelings about themselves, others, the world and their future most effectively through the development of valuable strategies. CBT also helps people to commit to goals in line with their values, all leading to the successful management and prevention of emotional and behavioural difficulties, improved relationships and well being. In line with the values of the practice, Simon Turmanis & Associates, Clinical Psychologists, Yasmeen is building skills as an Acceptance and Commitment (ACT) Therapist.
Training and Professional Development
Yasmeen is a Clinical Psychologist who completed her Bachelor of Psychology with First class Honours, at the University of New South Wales (in 2005), and a Doctorate of Clinical Psychology and Master of Science at the University of Sydney. She is registered, and clinically endorsed with The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and The Psychology Board of Australia (PBA), enabling recognition as a clinical psychologist. She is also a member of The Australian Clinical Psychology Association (ACPA). Yasmeen has also attended professional development workshops and additional lectures covering Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, drug and alcohol problems, suicide intervention, positive psychology, bullying, schema therapy, dialectical behaviour therapy and mindfulness meditation.
Research
Yasmeen spent four years researching the experiences, needs and quality of life of informal caregivers of people with stroke. She carried out platform presentations at the 21st Stroke Society of Australasia Annual Scientific Meeting in Melbourne, September 1-3, 2010, and Postgraduate Psychology Conferences at The University of Sydney from 2008-2009. She also gave a presentation at the Annual Community Stroke Forum held by the National Stroke Foundation at Canterbury RSL in 2009. In addition, a poster presentation was given at the 19th European Stroke Conference (ESC) during May 25-28 at Barcelona, Spain. She is currently working towards publishing her research within a high quality peer reviewed journal.
