Simon Turmanis - Clinical Psychologist

Simon is highly regarded amongst his colleagues, other health professionals and clients. He is a warm, caring, creative and thoughtful therapist, dedicated to help clients make the changes necessary to reach their goals of therapy.


Experience

Simon has six years’ private practice experience working with adults of all ages, couples, adolescents, children and families on a broad range of issues (see Client Issues). He also gained four years’ experience working with inpatients and outpatients across two inpatient units and 3 outpatient programs in individual, relationship and group therapy at the Northside Clinic (a 94 bed private psychiatric hospital). During 2002 he utilised several therapy models to help people return to work after a psychological injury or stressor. Simon has also worked within the public health system to help children, adolescents and their families at the Royal North Shore Hospital’s Unit of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and in the Queenscliff Mental Health Centre’s Northern Beaches Adolescent Service. He has an ongoing passion with and commitment to, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). It involves teaching skills of mindfulness and acceptance around thoughts, feelings, values and behaviours, whilst strengthening the non judgemental compassionate observer to aid with connection to the present moment, a greater sense of experience, increased flexibility in situations, and, increased committed action in line with values.

Training and Professional Development

Simon Turmanis is a qualified and experienced Clinical Psychologist who completed his Masters of Clinical Psychology at Macquarie University in 2004, after a year working as a psychologist in occupational rehabilitation. Simon also gained Honours in psychology and membership to the Australian Psychological Society (APS) (2001). Simon has obtained specific clinical experience, supervision and continuing professional development (post his masters qualification) to gain membership to the APS College of Clinical Psychologists and be recognised by Medicare as a specialist provider of psychological services. He is registered with the Psychologists’ Board of Australia (PBA) as a psychologist and supervisor, and, is a member of the Association of Contextual Behavioural Science (ACBS). Simon has continued professional development in CBT, Schema Therapy, and, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) since completion of his Masters.

Research

Simon spent three years researching the psychological effects (anxiety, stress, depression, PTSD, satisfaction with life) of harassment and stalking on people, developing a published scale “The Stalking and Harassment Behaviour Scale” (SHBS -Turmanis & Brown, 2006), and the SHBS-Revised (Turmanis & Peters, 2006). Simon presented a paper based on this research at the Australian Psychological Society annual conference in 2002.

Supervision

Simon Turmanis is registered as a supervisor with the Psychologists’ Board of Australia (PBA). Simon is qualified to provide supervision for interns wishing to become registered with the NSW Registration Board AND/OR Clinical Psychologists wishing to become members of the APS College of Clinical Psychologists. Simon has been working with the ACT model for 5 years and is passionate about supervising clinicians wishing to work within the ACT model.

Educating GP’s

Simon was asked to present to 20 Manly Warringah Division GP’s in 2010 on Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Well received, this presentation helped inform the doctors on effective treatment, management and referral of their patients regarding ADHD. It also served as a professional development activity for the GP’s.
