Dr Mitchell Dowling - Experienced Clinical Psychologist
Mitchell is an experienced, warm, genuine, and caring Clinical Psychologist. He has spent over a decade developing clinical assessment, treatment (therapy), and research skills of excellence and has achieved at the highest standards, being awarded both a PhD in Clinical Psychology from the University of Canberra in addition to Honours in Psychology. Over the course of his career, Mitchell has worked in public health, private practice, at Headspace, and in rehabilitation services with a wide range of people, of differing ages (children, adolescents, young adults and older people). Such clients were from diverse backgrounds, with various presenting problems, including: adjustment, anxiety, depression, anger, perfectionism, stress management, ADHD, self-harm, chronic pain, and personality disorders.
Training, Experience, and Expertise
During his Honours year Mitchell conducted research exploring the help-seeking behaviours of victims of bullying. Mitchell then continued his academic studies, enrolling in a combined Masters/PhD program, completing placements at Headspace, the Australian Defence Force Academy, and in Alice Springs. His PhD thesis explored the processes and effectiveness of online counselling. This research resulted in the publication of five journal articles and a presentation at the International Youth Mental Health Conference in Brighton. During Mitchell’s Undergraduate, Masters and PHD degrees, Mitchell worked as a qualified Social Worker for the Richmond Fellowship of the ACT, helping clients in their recovery from severe mental health problems. Working with these individuals to adapt to and overcome these issues was an extremely formative experience in Mitchells’ development as an experienced therapist and eventually, as a Clinical Psychologist.
After completing his PhD and obtaining full registration as a Psychologist, Mitchell has worked and gained significant experience in a wide variety of services, including private practice, rehabilitation, and youth early intervention. Mitchell is an extremely motivated, passionate, enthusiastic and committed Clinical Psychologist; Passionate about working collaboratively with clients to identify, understand, and address psychological issues affecting their wellbeing.
He recognises that each client is unique, and benefits from having an individualised treatment plan. To assist his clients reach their goals of therapy, Mitchell utilises a range of evidence based psychological treatments including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Schema Therapy, and Motivational Interviewing.
In October 2017, during Mental Health Week, Mitchell and Simon Turmanis visited St Paul’s Catholic College, Manly to provide an educational presentation to students and staff on mental health and wellbeing.
