Dr Veena Sothieson - Experienced Clinical Psychologist

Veena is a warm, compassionate, and experienced Clinical Psychologist who is committed to helping clients enhance their psychological wellbeing. She utilises a collaborative and supportive approach, as she is passionate about strengthening clients’ existing adaptive skills, while also offering new learning and skills to help them achieve their goals.

Training, Experience, and Expertise

Veena completed her doctoral degree in New Zealand and completed her internship in both adult and child and adolescent community mental health teams. She has experience working with clients who present with a range of needs including anxiety, depression, stress management, anger management, adjusting to life changes, eating disorders and body image concerns, self-harm, and difficulties associated with emotional regulation and distress tolerance.

She has worked in child and adolescent mental health settings in New Zealand where she has provided assessment and treatment for a variety of psychological issues. She also has experience conducting cognitive assessments with young people. More recently, she has worked with adults, adolescents and children using brief intervention models in primary care, and has worked across four secondary schools in Auckland, New Zealand. At these schools, she provided individual and group therapy to support adolescents with developmental changes and life challenges.

She has also worked with older adults when developing and facilitating memory groups as part of her doctoral thesis. She presented her Honours research findings about New Zealand norms for two brief cognitive screening tools at the New Zealand Psychological Society annual conference in 2010. She has undertaken training in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Maudsley Family Based Therapy for eating disorders, and in treating PTSD and complex trauma.

Veena is enthusiastic and passionate about working with a wide range of clients and understands the importance of developing treatment plans to suit individual needs, which she integrates with evidence-based therapies such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and DBT. She is committed to helping clients pursue their goals, to create change, and to form more meaningful connections in their lives
